Qona Christie from Wellington High School and Alex Rivett from Onslow College have recently been named in the New Zealand Judo Team to compete in the Oceania Judo Championships in Noumea in April this year.
Both Qona and Alex are part of the Judo New Zealand’s Youth Development Team who attended the Australian Institute of Sport in September 2014. Unfortunately the 2018 Commonwealth Games will not be hosting Judo as a sport so the focus of this Development Team is the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
The Oceania Championships will be the first time for Qona to compete as part of the New Zealand Team. For Alex this will be his second year in a row competing at this level. Last year Alex won a bronze medal in this event. Both Qona and Alex are very highly placed on the New Zealand ranking points list and have the ability to medal in this event. With the build up to these championships they are attending a National Training Camp in Wanganui this weekend and both will compete in Napier at the East Coast Open Championships in March. Alex is also going to Brisbane in March to compete at the Queensland International Open where competitors have already been confirmed from throughout Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Japan.
