WEGC on a High After National Success in Futsal and Floorball

A few days after winning the Wellington regional tournament, the Wellington East Girls’ College junior futsal team was crowned national champions, while both the senior and junior teams won their respective floorball national tournaments.

WEGC was one of four different winning schools at the NZSS Futsal tournament held in Wellington, with Wellington College winning the Senior Boys and Scots College winning the Junior Boys. Palmerston North Girls’ High School won the Senior Girls.

WEGC team spokesperson Rachel Eichler said the team knew they had a chance after winning the Wellington tournament the week before. “We were confident but we knew it would be tough, so it was amazing to actually do it because there were good teams there.”

The team played six games over the two days, winning five and losing one. The loss was to Mount Albert Grammar School (1-3) on day one, but they beat the other two Auckland schools, Diocesan School for Girls and Marist College, twice each. After overcoming Marist College 3-1 on the first day they beat them 4-2 the next day in the final.

“We had a supportive crowd behind us for the final,” said Rachel. “There were also quite a few Capital Football and futsal scouts and coaches watching us, so there was a bit of pressure there as well!”

The Wellington Regional tournament was a day-long event. “They only had two Junior teams enter, so we had to play in the Senior tournament. We ended up coming fifth overall, but we were the highest placed Junior team so we won our division.” Onslow College was the other team. Hutt Valley High School were the Senior champions.

Rachel is a defensive player in futsal, and was joined in the side by twin sister Sarah. The team comprised two year nines and nine year 10s. The nucleus of the team has been playing outdoor football and latterly futsal together for several years. WEGC won the Wellington Junior football league last year and many will be trialling for the First XI this year.

Sammi Preval was the NZSS Junior Girls Futsal MVP last week. “She is one of our outside players. She scores quite a few goals, and she has a great attitude and she sets a really good example for us and for other teams – she is certainly very hard to play against.”

Rachel thanked coach Sam Kendrick. “She has been playing football and futsal her whole life and I have known her for about 10 years. She recently suffered a few concussions so she can’t play anymore, but she has devoted her life to coaching and she has been coaching our school, club and representative teams for a few years.”

It was a great week for WEGC, who also won both the Senior and U15 NZSS floorball national titles.

The U15 final was a double-header. WEGC came back after losing 5-0 in the first leg to win the second game 5-0 and thus tie it up. The final went into golden goal and Stella McCarthy scored a winning penalty.
