Tawa College 1st XI girls win national qualifying tournament
Tawa College will represent Wellington at the National Secondary Schools First XI cricket tournament after a crushing 95 run victory over Wellington Girls’ College.
The catalyst for Tawa’s victory was an opening partnership of 113 between Amelia Kerr and Kate-Ann Fenton. New Zealand representative Kerr was imperious from the outset belting 74 off 40 balls. Her innings included 12 boundaries.
Fenton kicked onto make 54 and with support from Georgia Plimmer (36) and wayward bowling Tawa reached 192/3 in 20 overs. Wellington Girls’ conceded 26 extras.
Wellington was three wickets down in as many overs and despite a brief rearguard by Anna Martin (18) and Beth Molony (17), Wellington fell well short finishing on 98/9 after 20 overs.
Tawa’s all-round excellence was showcased by the fact they used 10 bowlers, five of whom took wickets. Additionally Tawa executed three run outs.
The National championships are in December.
