Hurricanes U14 Festival – 2022 Update #1

Tālofa lava, manuia le vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa (Happy Samoan Language week)

Thank you for registering your team for the 2022 Hurricanes U14 Festival.  I know how much work goes into organising teams to go away, so I do thank you for your hard work.

This update is just you give you some key information, to make your planning for the festival over the three days that much easier.  Please pass on to your management team or add them to mail list.

We are currently have the following schools registered:

  • Nelson College
  • Feilding High School
  • Papamoa College
  • Rongotai College
  • Rosmini College
  • St Bernard’s College
  • St Patrick’s College (Wellington)
  • St Patrick’s College (Silverstream)
  • St Thomas of Canterbury College
  • Wellington College

The first round of games will be on Monday 29th August starting from 12pm.  All games will be played at Wakefield Park Artificial Turf in Island Bay, Wellington.  This may help with your booking of accommodation.  If you do require early / late kick offs on certain days, please let me know.

Aim of the Festival

The aim of the festival is not high performance, but rather to try to engage students under 14 with the game of rugby.  It is hoping that students within school that haven’t had a chance to play during the year, get an opportunity to play.  There will be NO FINALS.  Think of it as a school camp with just happens to have some rugby games attached to it.

Your registration fee includes a FREE laundry service.  This means you leave your 22 jerseys, socks, and shorts with us after using them on the day, and by magic they are ready the next day, all clean and folded.

Festival T-shirts

Dynasty is the official merchandise provider for the Hurricanes U14 festival.  Your team is able to purchase either a Hurricanes U14 festival t-shirt or a custom colour festival t-shirt including your own logo.  They can be free of Dynasty’s logo if needed, thus not affecting any school’s current clothing arrangement.   Orders must be completed by Monday 20 June, so that the design work on the custom t-shirts can be completed on time.  If you would like advice on the design, please contact Paul Latham at or 027 278 7087 or see the attachments.

Rules of the festival

The festival will follow the rules as stated in the 2022 CSW Rugby Handbook as well as NZ Rugby Domestic Safety Law Variations.  This means the half game rule does apply, but there will be quarter time stoppages to allow for substitutions.  I am also open to allowing more than 22 players being available to suit up for a game based on the philosophy of the festival.  Please let me know if this is the case for your school.

Player Eligibility

  • A player must be under 14 as at 1 January 2022 (born in 2008 or 2009).
  • A player must be eligible to play as per School Sport NZ eligibility
  • All players must be registered on NZ Rugby database (via SPORTY)

There will be more information released closure to the festival.  If you have any questions about accommodation or anything else related to the festival, including all the awesome things you can do in Wellington city, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
