Silverstream & Upper Hutt College win NZSSSC innovation in school sport award
An innovative and collaborative approach to addressing the shortage of referees in secondary school basketball has seen St Patrick’s College Silverstream and Upper Hutt College awarded the 2017 Innovation in School Sport Award.
Involving College Sport Wellington, BasketballNZ and Capital Basketball the opportunity was open to all colleges from the Hutt Valley and included creating a 4 week league with the sole purpose of referee development. A Facebook group, Valley Basketball College Referees, was set up as the communication channel and a student refereeing pathway established – including a grading night held every six weeks.
In conferring the award, the New Zealand Secondary School Sport Council (NZSSSC) board acknowledged the positive approach to a current issue in secondary school basketball and the success of the initiative
