Finalists Announced for 2024 College Sport Wellington SPOTY’s


2023 Supreme Winners - Erice van Leuven and Finn Harland

The finalists for the 2024 College Sport Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards (SPOTY’s) have been announced.

The 35th SPOTY’s will be held this coming Sunday, starting 5:30pm, at Te Rauparaha Arena.  They recognise the achievements and contributions of the leading players, teams, coaches, volunteers and officials from this year in secondary school sport in the Wellington region.

Awards will be presented in a number of individual and team categories, culminating in the two most anticipated awards of the evening, the male and female sportspersons of the year Supreme Awards, of which there are 35 nominees in each gender.

As well as the Supreme Award winners, the All-Rounder of the Year finalists will be much anticipated on the night. Often playing and excelling in multiple sports, these athletes are amongst the busiest and hardest working of all.  The three boys all-rounder finalists are Thompson Tukapua (St Pat’s Silverstream), Mason Carey (St Bernard’s College) and Wesley Faitele (Taita College).  The girls all-rounder of the year award will come from Phoebe Gray (Samuel Marsden Collegiate), Rebecca Bailey (St Oran’s College) and Chelsey Moananu (Wellington East Girls’ College).

As well as individual awards, the Team of the Year award will be much anticipated. There are 12 finalists in this category, these being: Heretaunga College dragon boating, Onslow College adventure racing, Samuel Marsden rowing U15 Girls Coxed Quad, St Oran’s College dragon boating, St Pat’s Town futsal, Wainuiomata High School ki o rahi and AWD basketball, Wellington College Senior A basketball and Senior A underwater hockey, Wellington East Girls’ College Senior A futsal, Queen Margaret College senior tennis and Wellington Girls’ College rowing U18 Doubles.

The awards aren’t just for those athletes on the court, pitch or water, officials are also recognised. Two such awards are the Student Coach of the Year and Student Official of the Year and there are a combined 14 nominees for this award on Sunday.

Similarly, the Volunteer of the Year of the Award has six finalists, these being: Dean Waddington (Hutt International Boys’ School), Cath Taggart (Onslow College), Teresa Cargo (Upper Hutt College), Stuart Beresford (Wellington College), Nathan Wallace (Wellington East Girls’ College) and Jo Hiles (Wellington Girls’ College).

A number of recent Supreme Award winners have gone on to reach the pinnacle of their sports after leaving school, recent winners include three-time winner Melie Kerr who was Player of the Tournament at the recent T20 Women’s Cricket World Cup, 2024 Paris Olympians Lewis Clareburt and Daniel Hillier.
